Nose Lift or Rhinoplasty is the surgical enhancement of the nose. The two major parts of the nose that are given prime consideration are the root or the “bridge” and the tip. Most Caucasians undergo nasal reduction while most Asians, especially those coming from a Malay ancestry, undergo augmentation or the so called “lift”. Most cases, however, require remodeling of the nasal tip. Others also undergo trimming of the over hanging ala. However, in Oriental Rhinoplasty, the general attitude is simply to enhance the oriental features and avoid the pitfalls of an obvious and unnatural look because of “caucasianizing” the elements of the nose.

Nose Lift FAQ's

What material is used for augmentation?
A solid block of silicon is carved, tailored to the need of the patient. (I create a nasal mold where I base my sculpture preoperatively). Silicon is an inert material. It does not cause inflammation. The reaction of the body is simply forming a capsule around the material.

What about the scar?
The incision for nasal augmentation is hidden on the hair bearing area of the nose. The same approach is used for inserting the implant and remodeling the cartilage in order to enhance the nasal tip.

Is silicon injection safe?
No. The use of liquid silicon, particularly injecting the material on the nose, has been abandoned since 1975. Since it is liquid, the material spreads readily around the tissue, causing multiple lumps and redness. Extracting the material is very difficult since it has already dispersed around the nose.

Will I get admitted in the hospital?
Needless to say, a good preoperative evaluation will asses your condition (looking into your medical problems) if you are fit to undergo the operation. Most if not all, do not require hospital admission. The augmentation surgery is done under local anesthesia with a mild form of sedation. Once fully awake after the procedure, the patient is sent home, and returns to the clinic the following day for follow up.

What do I expect after the operation?
The acute swelling occurs for 2-3 days, subsides until about 10 days or more. By the end of the 2nd week, you get to see the eventual outcome of the surgery. But most patients enjoy their noses from 2-6 months, to even a year. Remember that the whole healing process nearly completes after 2 months, but the natural remodeling of the nose lasts up to 1 year. There is a special care of the implant and the wound after the operation.

What are the possible complications?
Although silicon is an inert material, it is still a foreign material to the body. Infection, implant deviation, even extrusion of the implant can happen. These complications are remedied by performing the operation in a sterile environment, taking of antibiotics, using the proper size and shape of the implant, and application of a sound surgical technique.
