LIPOSUCTION

Liposuction or Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) is the removal of fats under negative pressure using a cannula inserted underneath the skin along the fatty layers through multiple small incisions (yielding minimal scars). Liposuction is the most common form of body contouring surgery. The body parts usually addressed with liposuction are the abdomen, flanks (love-handles), arms, wings and back, and thighs.

Liposuction FAQ's

Is it optimal for me?
The ideal candidate for liposuction is the young individual, who is in good health (evaluated to be fit to undergo the operation), and has good skin tone. A good skin tone is important because it is necessary for the skin to redrape the area worked on, and not sag after the procedure. Remember that the liposuction technique originally evolved not to treat the over-weight or the obese, but out of concern for the isolated stubborn bulges that were seemingly unresponsive to diet and exercise. Because of improvements in modern technique, now, it includes the older and the more over weight patients, who would not be considered as candidates for liposuction in the past. However, patient selection is still very imperative.

What are the limits of liposuction?
Liposuction removes only the fat. It cannot correct the laxity of the muscle tone (e.g. abdominal wall) and the redundant skin. It may be necessary to excise the excess skin and repair the abdominal wall – tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty). Liposuction also cannot remove the stretch marks in the involved areas. There are also limits in the total volume of fat to be suctioned.

Will you rather perform the procedure under local anesthesia?
It depends on the amount and the area of fat to be suctioned. However, it is always prudent to consider safety before cost. Ergo, the assistance of an Anesthesiologist is often necessary - performing the procedure under regional (spinal or epidural) or general anesthesia.

Does the fat go back?
The fat that had been surgically removed is gone. However, the remaining thin layer of fat can increase in size and quantity when one slumbers and binges! It must be emphasized that the optimal result of body contouring surgery is a cycle of life-style changes, proper diet, continuous exercise, and appropriate surgery.

What are the things to expect immediately after the operation?
There will be fluid discharges coming out of the small incisions. Acute swelling takes about 3 days and subsides subsequently. In a few days you will notice the bruising over the involved areas– yellow, blue and black. It will take a few weeks for this to clear out. You will experience numbness and hardening on the areas worked on. It will take a few weeks for these areas to soften and a few months to regain its sensitivity.

What are the long term results of the procedure?
Liposuction has very rewarding and pleasing outcome. It takes a few weeks or months for the new layer of skin and fat to adjust to its final configuration. During this period, it is important to wear the necessary compressive garments in order to guide the skin as it redrapes the area. However, contour deformities remain to be the most common post-operative sequelae. This can be minimized by employing several techniques.
