EYEBAG REMOVAL

Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery addresses the complaint of baggy eyelids. The eye area of the face plays a central role in the expression of emotion, health, and aging. And the eyes show significant changes as one gets older. The supportive underlying tissue around the eyes weakens and the fatty tissues around the eyes protrude, resulting in visible eye bags and swelling – a tired look. Facial rejuvenation is the most common indication for eyelid surgery. Eyelid Surgery removes the excess skin, the redundant muscles, and the protruding fat - offering a more youthful appearance.

Eyebag Removal FAQ's

What about the scar?
Although the eyelid skin is one of the hardest to handle being the thinnest skin of the entire body, but conversely, it is one of the best areas to heal very well. In fact, individuals who are keloid formers do not develop keloids in their eyelids! Upper eyelid scars are concealed over the natural crease of the eye folds where the incisions are made. In the lower eyelids, the incision is done a few millimeters below the eye lashes. In a few weeks when the redness subsides, the scar becomes inconspicuous.

Will I get admitted in the hospital?
Needless to say, a good preoperative evaluation will asses your condition (looking into your medical problems) if you are fit to undergo the operation, including an evaluation by an Ophthalmologist (eye doctor). Most if not all, do not require hospital admission. The surgery is done under local anesthesia with a mild form of sedation. Although, your Internist may advise an intra-operative monitoring if needed. Once fully awake after the procedure, the patient is sent home, and returns to the clinic the following day for follow up.

What is the recovery time?
The acute swelling occurs in about 2 days, subsides up to 10 days or more. Patients can do their normal chores after 2 days, and can return to their office work as early as 3 days after the operation. By the end of the 2nd week you will be able to evaluate the outcome of the operation. But most patients enjoy their eyelids after 2 months when the redness of the scar has disappeared, and 6 months to a year when the eyelids have fully adjusted to its new state. Remember that the whole healing process nearly completes after 2 months, but the natural remodeling lasts up to 1 year.

Why do some individuals look “startled” after the surgery?
The pitfalls of having an unnatural look for most oriental eyelids after surgery occur when the eyelids are “caucasianized” – creating bigger crescent-shape-folds, and achieving deep-set-eyes. A “stared” and “startled” look results from an aggressive skin excision, especially in the lower eyelid.

Will all my wrinkles be gone after the operation?
No. The limits of attaining a natural rejuvenated look dictate the amount of wrinkles that can be removed with the skin excision. Otherwise, running after all the wrinkles, especially in the lower eyelids, will result to an over excised, unnatural, and “startled” look. These remaining wrinkles are better managed by various forms of peels, use of Botox, and even fillers.

What about my droopy eyebrows and sagging cheeks?
The Eyelid Surgery should account only for the contributory elements in the eyelid per se that result to an aged look. For optimal rejuvenation of the face, while avoiding problems resulting from over-extending the indication of Eyelid Surgery to address the brow/forehead and the cheek areas, a Brow Lift operation and a Mid-face or Full-Face Lift may be recommended.

I don’t have an eye fold. Can it be created?
Among Orientals, individuals who come from a particular Chinese ancestry usually have no eye fold. The fold in the upper eyelid can be assigned or created. The surgical procedure entails a meticulous and precise anatomic approximation of the elements involved.
